Why Isn't My Botox Working Yet?
If you've recently had Botox® (or another neurotoxin like Dysport®) and you're checking the mirror every few hours wondering why nothing has changed, you're not alone. One of the most common questions we hear at Alma Esthetics is:
"Why isn't my Botox working yet?"
The short answer? It takes time.
Unlike dermal fillers, which provide immediate volume, Botox works by gradually relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. The results don't happen overnight, but they do happen in stages.
Botox Timeline: What to Expect
Day 1-2: Treatment Day
Your treatment is complete, but you probably won't notice any difference yet.
The neurotoxin has been injected into the targeted muscles, but it hasn't had time to block the nerve signals that cause muscle movement.
What you'll notice:
Mild redness or tiny bumps at the injection sites (usually gone within 30 minutes)
Little to no change in wrinkles
You may be tempted to search for ways to make your Botox work faster, but unfortunately, there isn't a shortcut. Botox simply needs time to bind to the nerve endings. The best thing you can do is follow your provider's aftercare instructions and let the treatment take effect naturally.
Days 3-7: The First Signs
Some people begin to notice subtle changes.
You may find it a little harder to make certain facial expressions, or you may notice that your forehead or frown lines aren't moving quite as much.
Don't worry if you don't notice anything yet—this is completely normal.
It's also completely normal if one side of your face seems to respond a little faster than the other. As the neurotoxin continues to take effect over the next several days, those results usually even out.
Days 7-14: Results Become More Noticeable
This is when most clients start seeing visible improvement.
Your muscles continue to relax, making lines appear softer and creating a smoother, more refreshed appearance.
Many people comment that they look more rested, even if they can't pinpoint exactly why.
During this time, it's still important to avoid judging your final results too early. Your treatment is still working behind the scenes.
Days 14+: Full Results
Around two weeks after treatment, you'll typically see your final result.
This is why we recommend waiting 10-14 days before deciding whether you need any adjustments.
If a touch-up is needed, this is the ideal time for your provider to evaluate your results.
Why Does Botox Work Faster for Some People?
Everyone responds a little differently. Several factors can affect how quickly your results appear, including:
Your individual metabolism
The strength of your facial muscles
The areas treated
Previous neurotoxin treatments
The product used (Botox or Dysport)
While Dysport may begin working slightly sooner for some patients, both products typically reach full results within about two weeks.
What If My Botox Still Isn't Working After Two Weeks?
If it's been 14 days and you haven't noticed much improvement, don't panic.
There are several possible reasons:
You may have stronger facial muscles that require additional units.
Your treatment plan may need to be adjusted.
The treated muscles may not have been the primary cause of your wrinkles.
If you're concerned about your results, this is the time to contact your injector and schedule a follow-up appointment. Your provider can evaluate your results and determine whether any adjustments are appropriate.
A Few Things to Remember After Your Appointment
While waiting for your results, it's important to follow your post-treatment instructions. Most providers recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for the first 24-48 hours after your appointment. You can typically wear light makeup later the same day, but avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas so the product stays where it was intended to work. Lastly, avoid excessive alcohol intake as this may increase your risk for bruising.
How Long Will Botox Last?
Most Botox and Dysport treatments last 3 to 4 months, although this varies from person to person.
Staying on a consistent treatment schedule can help maintain smoother results and may even prevent deeper lines from becoming more noticeable over time.
